CHAPTER EIGHT

ONE of Nick’s bar staff, George, had burned his hand on the cappuccino machine and even though Nick hadn’t started work yet he accompanied him down to the sick bay to assure himself George got there safely. Seemed the responsible thing to do—him being manager.

Nick glanced around the waiting room as they waited, peered behind the desk to see who was in the obs ward and leaned back nonchalantly when Marie arrived to log the new patient.

The door to the consulting room opened and he started to smile but it dimmed a little when Wilhelm appeared to direct the barman into his office. His friend raised his eyebrows at Nick as he hovered, lifted his hand in a sardonic wave, and when Nick continued to stand there he came out.

‘She’s not here.’ Wilhelm shrugged and pretended his ignorance of Tara’s whereabouts. ‘Not due for another couple of hours.’ He lowered his voice.

‘You sure she’s for you? Don’t know if she’s your party girl, Nick. Very serious, aloof, you sure you guys are from the same planet? I wouldn’t like to see her hurt.’

Since when was Wilhem Tara’s new protector? Nick avoided Will’s eyes. He’d already seen a side different from serious and aloof. Heck, he’d had her giggling in her seat of the little sports car, before they’d been held up in the traffic.

‘She has some issues. But you’re right. I don’t want to add to them.’ He shrugged. ‘Just wanted to make sure she’s okay after yesterday.’

‘Seemed fine when she dropped in for a minute this morning.’

‘So she’s been in?’

Wilhelm tapped his head as if it all suddenly came back. ‘Gone to the crew auditions, I think.’

‘Just remembered that, did you?’

‘Need to get rid of you so I can do my work.’ Wilhelm raised his brows as if to say, So why are you still here?

‘Thanks.’ Nick moved to the door and crossed to the stairway. A sudden excess of energy had him jogging up them two at a time to the next level, where he could cross to the cavernous stage theatre.

They’d been nagging him all week to do a baritone spotlight at the crew pageant and at the time he hadn’t been in the mood but the cruise director had hinted about setting an example to his staff and finally he’d agreed. So he had the excuse.

To his delight the first person he saw there was Tara, under her own spotlight on the stage, though less delightful was that she was dancing with Miko, Nick’s counterpart on the restaurant side and the suavest man on the ship. They were leaning together to the strains of a sexy salsa.

Tara yelped and the music halted. Miko stepped back off her foot with an apologetic shuffle while Tara rubbed her toes. Even better, as far as Nick was concerned, one of the directors came across and pointed the senior catering officer to the phone. They all knew what that meant.

Nick vaulted over the seats in front of him and disappeared up the side steps into the wings before Tara had a chance to back away.
